More than 50 people were killed and hundreds were injured in the West Java province of Indonesia on Monday as a result of a 5.6-magnitude earthquake, international media reported.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the 5.6-magnitude earthquake had its epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers in the Cianjur region of West Java province and devastatingly shook Indonesia on Monday, November 21.

“There are 46 dead people at the Cianjur regional hospital and around 700 injured people. Many were hurt because they were hit by collapsed buildings, National Disaster Mitigation Agency chief Suharyanto.

While the rescuers were attempting to reach survivors trapped beneath the rubble, a number of reported landslides and 25 recorded tremors occurred in the area of Cianjur.

Among the destroyed structures, according to the Natural Disaster agency, were reportedly an Islamic boarding school, a hospital, and other public institutions.

At a news conference on Monday, the national disaster agency reported that up to 700 people had been wounded and far more than 300 structures had been damaged or fully destroyed.

Indonesia geographically lies on what is called the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” a seismically active belt where multiple plates in the earth’s crust collide, resulting in a great number of earthquakes and volcanoes.

In 2004, a powerful earthquake in Indonesia unleashed a devastating tsunami that killed over 226,000 people—more than half of them in Indonesia—in 14 different countries.
